Meanwhile, he had served as the 11th vice-president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 under the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo. A position that he held and made a lot of net fortunes.
Although, it is widely rumored that it was Atiku’s treachery and disloyalty to his boss (the then president of Nigeria Obasanjo), that made his boss to vow not to allow him to become the next president of the country in 2007.
Consequently, when Olusegun Obasanjo was to hand over power to the Northern axis, Atiku declared his interest to contest for presidential election but Obasanjo never allowed him to get the party ticket.

Meanwhile, Atiku doggedly, challenged the findings of the panel and the actions of the INEC in the Supreme Court.
Consequently, the Supreme Court ordered the electoral commission to restore Abubakar’s name onto the presidential ballot.
Atiku ran on the platform of the Action Congress, but lost in the election, placing third after Umaru Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) respectively.
Atiku however did not give up as he later contest in the recently concluded elections in Nigeria, where he contested for president.
